On This Day in History - January 9, 2014

On this day in America in 1951, the U.N. opened its headquarters in New York City. Also on this day in America in 1929, the Seeing Eye Organization based in Nashville Tennessee began for the first time to train seeing eye dogs to aid the blind. Lastly on this day in America in 1493, Christopher Columbus recorded in his journal that he had sighted three mermaids, writing that they were not as pretty as first imagined; and that is not surprising considering that they were actually manatees.

On this day in Canada in 1899, Manitoba teaches us that we think this polar vortex is bad, they suffered under a record low -52.8 degrees Celsius (-63 Fahrenheit). Also on this day in Canada in 1885 and 1888, Canada strengthens its ties with America by opening two bridges in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, the International bridge in 1885, and another lane-way to the U.S. across St. Mary's river in 1888.

"A people without knowledge of their past history, origin and culture is like a tree without roots."
