On This Day in History - January 5, 2014

On this day in America in 1933, work began on the now world-famous Golden Gate bridge in San Francisco, which at the time was to be the world's largest suspension bridge, spanning a total of 1.7 miles.

On this day in Canada in 1910, Le club athletique Canadien hockey team, modern day Montreal Canadiens, play their first game seven years before the founding of the NHL; a team that would be composed entirely of francophones until the 1911-12 season.

"A people without knowledge of their past history, origin and culture is like a tree without roots."
