On this day in Canada in 1932, Governor General, the Earl of Bessborough speaks to the Lieutenant Governor of each province to inaugurate the Trans-Canada telephone system. Also on this day in Canada in 1822, one of the father's of confederation, hockey player, founder of the Toronto Newspaper, the North American, and Lieutenant Governor of the Northwest Territories, William McDougall was born in York County, Ontario. Lastly on this day in Canada in 1870, Louis Riel begins a two week convention to consider the Canadian proposals put forward by Donald Alexander regarding Manitoba's and the Northwest Territories' acceptance into the Confederation of Canada.
