On this day in Canada in 1795, Upper Canada Governor Lord John Graves Simcoe orders that the famous 80km Younge Street highway be built from the town of York (modern day Toronto) to Lake Simcoe; designed to act as both a military route to protect Upper Lake Huron and a portage route for the North West Company.
