On this day in America in 1891, the first basketball game was played in Springfield College in Massachusetts. Also, on this day in American history Islamic Extremists were at it again, as Libyan Muslim terrorists planted a bomb on Pan-Am Flight 103 travelling from London to New York, resulting in the death of 243 passengers, 16 crew members and 11 people on the ground, as the plane blew up over Lockerbie, Scotland.
On this day in Canadian history in 1943, Canada demonstrates its great ability, courage, and honour on the battlefield as the 2nd Canadian Infantry Brigade attacks the Italian town of Ortona, beginning a week long house to house battle during the month known as "Bloody December" between our boys and Nazi troops. Yet, while over 1,372 Canadians died, one quarter of all causalities in the Mediterranean theater, the result was nothing short of total victory. Since, with the victory came the capturing of the city and its precious and rare deep-water port, which enabled the Allied Forces to not only bring in more men and supplies into the region, but also allowed them to launch further operations deeper into Italy and thus win WWII.
