On this day in America in 1998, President Bill Clinton was impeached for his affair with Monica Lewinsky after it was determined that he lied under oath to a federal grand jury by denying it. Also, on this day in American in 1972, NASA's last manned flight to the moon Apollo 17 and her crew returned to earth safely.

On this day in Canada in 1917 the inaugural season of the NHL got underway, with the Montreal Wanderers beating out the Toronto Arenas 10-9 on opening night. Also, on this day in Canada in 1984, Wayne Gretzky reaches 1000 points as a member of the Edmonton Oilers; becoming the youngest player to reach the mark at the age of 23, and the player who accomplished the feat in the least number of games, having played just 424 regular-season games.
