In the latest news sweeping North America surrounding the hit reality show Duck Dynasty, Phil Robertson after being caught interpreting scripture and utilizing his first amendment right was promptly suspended by the A&E network for his comments regarding homosexuality. So the question becomes, what are we to make of this?
Since, Duck Dynasty's inception back in 2012 it has consistently been one of the most watched and beloved shows across America and an absolute money making machine for A&E, proving once again that America is a right of center nation under God, no matter how long the Left lives among us. Yet, despite this, when head of the family Phil Robertson answered questions asked during an interview with GQ Magazine honestly, he was suspended from the show indefinitely.
So what were these horrible comments made about homosexuality, well the were as follows:
“Start with homosexual behavior and just morph out from there. Bestiality, sleeping around with this woman and that woman and that woman and those men,”
“It seems like, to me, a vagina—as a man—would be more desirable than a man’s anus. That’s just me. I’m just thinking: There’s more there! She’s got more to offer. I mean, come on, dudes! You know what I’m saying? But hey, sin: It’s not logical, my man. It’s just not logical.”
“I myself am a product of the ’60s; I centered my life around sex, drugs and rock and roll until I hit rock bottom and accepted Jesus as my Savior. My mission today is to go forth and tell people about why I follow Christ and also what the Bible teaches, and part of that teaching is that women and men are meant to be together. However, I would never treat anyone with disrespect just because they are different from me. We are all created by the Almighty and like Him, I love all of humanity. We would all be better off if we loved God and loved each other.”
Let's begin with the first comment, the entire argument for the legalization of homosexual marriage by the left is based on the premise that two consenting adults should be able to do as they please in the bedroom without interference from the government; the only limited government argument from the Left, next to their argument for abortion, in their entire agenda (which in and of itself is interesting). Therefore, by Phil Robertson commenting that homosexual behavior will lead to polygamy or any number of other such immoral sexual unions between consenting adults is simply a natural outflow of the Left's argument.
As for the second comment, it just makes sense that if God created woman and the vagina for the express purpose of performing sex, then yes it would have more to offer for a man's junk; then a butt hole which has not been created for sex. So as he indicated at the end of his second statement, it is simply illogical.
As for the last comment, the Bible does in fact speak openly and quite clearly against homosexuality in Romans 1:24-27, with the only immoral unions listed in the text being those of the homosexual nature. Thus, Phil Robertson was merely asserting his personal belief about what the Bible clearly states regarding homosexuality. Also, it must be noted that in his last comment lies the key to this entire fiasco, which is that he never once advocated for persecution of the LGBT community, in fact as he clearly states at the end of his comments:
"we are all created by the Almighty and like Him, I love all of humanity."
So while the Left and A&E are all up in arms because Phil Robertson dared to exercise his first amendment right to express an opinion about something in love, the truth of the matter is that the only reason these comments are seen as offensive are because people want them to be. Since, there is a difference between disagreeing with someone, and as A&E chose to do, persecuting and punishing someone because of their personal beliefs all because you chose to be offended.
That is what the first amendment is all about, since I also as a libertarian disagree with and sometimes find myself offended by much of what the left says, but the difference between the left and us on the Libertarian Right, is that we don't want those we disagree with punished or persecuted. Instead, we want them to continue to be able to speak so that people can judge for themselves what to believe; which by the way is the real reason that A&E and the Left need to punish Phil Robertson, since he makes a valid case founded in truth and love that goes against their own agenda and stands up for traditional American values.
Thus, whether you agree or disagree, are offended or not, by the comments made by Phil Robertson, we should all stand up and support Phil and his right to exercise without retaliation, the freedom provided to everyone by the first amendment. Since, it is only by the free and open exchange of ideas that we as a society can both grow, and also sharpen our own deeply held convictions and understandings by allowing others to disagree with us and highlight the alternatives which causes us to have to think more deeply about what we truly believe.
Moreover, if you are offended then simply don't watch the show, that is they beauty of capitalism in this nation, that it enables you to support those you like and agree with, and it doesn't force you in any way to support those you disagree with and don't like. Furthermore, as support for Phil Robertson blows up across North America, including from Governor of Phil's state Louisiana, Bobby Jindal, it is clear that A&E is punishing Phil Robertson, simply because they personally disagree with him and have personally chosen to be offended by him, not to protect the viability of the show.
That is why it is such a breath of fresh air that the Robertson family has already stated clearly that they could not imagine continuing Duck Dynasty without the head of their family in the show. Not only that, but the great thing about living today is that in the past Duck Dynasty would be cancelled because of the family's protest and that would be the last we'd hear of it. However, today, because of such networks as the Blaze, which has already offered Duck Dynasty a slot on their network in the case of cancellation, there is a place for the show to continue; meaning that not only will the great entertainment continue to exist for all of us to enjoy, but it will continue to make an important impact on the culture of America for the better.
